Overview of the Competition

SHAPE Charlotte Business Idea Competition
Charlotte Global Shapers

With the goal of inspiring economic development and job creation in Charlotte, the Charlotte Shapers are proud to announce the second annual SHAPE Charlotte Business Idea Competition. SHAPE Charlotte is an innovative business model competition created for, and by, the next generation of leaders.  SHAPE Charlotte will foster an entrepreneurial spirit among those 35 years of age or younger by empowering participants to act as agents of change through innovation and ultimately job creation.

Competitors will be selected based on their ability to demonstrate the viability, innovation, and impact of their business concept.

Selected competitors will:

  • Be matched with mentors with proven experience and results in business;
  • Produce a 90-second video pitch outlining their idea; and
  • Deliver a 5-minute presentation to a highly regarded panel of business professionals.

Competitors will be judged based on:

  • The attractiveness of the business idea;
  • The viability of the market opportunity; and
  • The impact on the economic development of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area.

The top two business ideas will receive:

  • Seed funding to launch their businesses;
  • Continued mentor support; and
  • In-kind support.

SHAPE Charlotte is unique among other area accelerator competitions in that it:

  • Focuses on business ideas among those 35 years of age or younger;
  • Offers continued mentor support to develop and launch the business concept;
  • Considers local economic development as a judging criterion; and
  • Welcomes business ideas from all industries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you have questions?  We have answers!

Please email us at contact@charlotteshapers.org or use our Contact Us page – we’ll put the most common questions up here!

  1. I don’t have a team – can I still apply as a team of 1? Absolutely! We encourage anyone with an idea to apply – whether you’re in a team of 1 or a team of 8.  We cap the teams at 8, however, so that participating teams can get good, quality time with their mentors.
  2. My team needs more time for the application – can we get an extension?  The deadline of September 30 is final.  We have a really tight schedule to keep and we want to give each team an equal opportunity to be selected!  On the plus side, we’re not expecting your team to have everything perfect in your application.  We just need to know your idea, who is on your team, and how passionate you are about it.  If selected, you will be paired with mentors who will guide you to make your idea rock-solid and a chance to win some money to take your idea and make it a reality!  (So don’t stress – send us the best you’ve got!)
  3. Some of our team members live outside of Mecklenburg County – may we apply?  At least one team member must be a permanent resident of the Charlotte Regional Area, which includes the following counties: Anson, Cabarrus, Gaston, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Union and York. Other team members may reside outside of the Charlotte Regional Area, however, the business must be headquartered in Charlotte.
  4. My business partner is over 35 – may we still apply? Yes, you may apply, however only team members under 35 may participate in the competition and making the pitch to the panel of judges. Team members over 35 are permitted to participate in the mentoring sessions.
  5. Does my business idea have to be a for-profit business?  Can my business idea be for  a non-profit business or a social enterprise?  We encourage applicants to submit any and all types of business ideas.  We’re not expecting the best ideas to fit into any specific category; what we want to see are viable, actionable businesses and teams that have done a thoughtful job of putting together their ideas.
  6. Last year there was a strong focus on “The Impact on Youth Unemployment.” Is that still a core component of the judging criteria?    Your business’ impact on youth unemployment will not directly impact its performance or review. Though youth unemployment is still a core tenant of the Charlotte Shapers, it has been removed as a criteria for judging throughout this competition.
